What is a Hook and Loop Fastener?

A hook and loop fastener is what most people commonly call Velcro, which is a brand name. This fastener is generally made of two strips, one with loops and one with hooks, that connect together to hold things. It is available in various colors, but generally black, white, and beige are the most common colors found. It is also made in different lengths, widths, and shapes.

A hook and loop fastener which comes in strips with an adhesive backing is the most popular type. There are also rolls of hook and loop fasteners which can be cut to a customized length. Sometimes, the paper on the adhesive side is pre-cut to make it easier to pull small parts away as needed. Another type is the coin style, or small, circular pieces of hook and loop fasteners, which also has an adhesive backing. This type of fastener can be made from a variety of materials including nylon, polyester, and high heat and fire resistant materials. It is also available in different strengths as well as with a variety of adhesive types, depending on the purpose the fastener is intended for.

For fabric applications, there are also sew-on hook and loop fasteners with no adhesive backing. This type is convenient for fabric and garment treatment construction. It is much simpler to apply than other types of closures and fasteners, such as zippers, buttonholes, and hook and eyes. For small children who have yet to learn how to tie shoes but still want to dress on their own, hook and loop fasteners are popular in shoe designs.

What is a D-ring?

A D-ring is a piece of hardware that may be metal or plastic, which is shaped like the letter D. It is utilized as a hooking device in most cases, and is sometimes attached to the end of a rope, chain, strap, or cable. The vertical part of the D-ring may be removable so it can be mounted at various points, though in most cases this part is fixed to the rest of the unit. The ring itself may be affixed to a solid surface or it may be attached to the strap on one end. This type of hardware is often employed as part of a tie-down system.

The material a D-ring is made from can vary depending on the intended application of the unit. For light duty needs, a plastic D-ring can be used. Plastic rings are often found on splints, braces, backpacks, luggage, or other carrying cases to allow attachment points or tie-downs. Steel D-ring pieces are normally utilized for heavier duty needs, such as industrial settings of factories, warehouses, or construction sites.
