Handicare is a worldwide supplier of technical aids for the physically disabled and the elderly.

Founded in 1986 and acquired by Nordic Capital Fund VII in 2010, Handicare has headquarters in Kista, Sweden, and distributes their products to 30 countries, with subsidiaries in Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, and the United States.

In 1980 at a Norwegian rehabilitation center, three wheelchair users-- three young men and all suffering from a paralyzing injury-- met by chance. And as most people do, they started talking when they realized that they all were not happy with the type of wheelchairs that were available in those bygone days. As the days and rehab went by, the three men decided that with their wheelchair-using experience, they were convinced that there could be better ways to aid the disabled. In 1986 they set up the inventory and work-space in their garage and started their own company, Rullestolekspertene--which translates as the ‘Wheelchair Experts’.

Now known as Handicare, a lot has happened over the years with the company. The company has doubled-down on their commitment help the elderly and disabled by offering them tools and devices to continue an active life – on their own terms. Handicare also wants to support those who are supporters, or caregivers, by providing them with well-designed solutions that will increase patient independence, making living easier for the patients, healthcare professionals, and family members.

Some examples of technical aids for the disabled and elderly include transfer and lifting devices, repositioning aids, commode shower chairs and bathing aids, Romedic patient lifts and slings, and patient turners.
